Eggciting News!!!

10/15/2008 3:37:53 PM
By Tabitha Alterman

The results from Mother Earth News’ latest round of pastured egg nutrient tests are beginning to come in. So far, pastured egg producers are kicking the commercial industry’s butt — woo hoo, go free range! We’ve invested a lot of time and energy over the last few years in researching the differences between the meat and eggs coming out of the commercial industry and those produced by conscientious farmers who let their animals graze on fresh pastures. In the past, we’ve found that eggs from hens raised on pasture, as compared to those commercially raised factory farm eggs, contain:

• 1⁄3 less cholesterol
• 1⁄4 less saturated fat
• 2⁄3 more vitamin A
• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E
• 7 times more beta carotene

Now we’re looking at vitamin D, which many of us do not get enough of because we don’t spend any time outdoors, and even when we do we use sunscreen that blocks vitamin D production. Eggs are one of the few food sources of naturally occurring vitamin D, and we wondered if true free-range eggs might be higher in this important vitamin, too. Our latest tests show that pastured eggs have anywhere between 4 to 6 times as much vitamin D as typical supermarket eggs.

So … (1) Get out there and eat some fresh farm eggs! and (2) Check out the ongoing pastured egg research at Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

Happy beekeeping!

Yesterday I met a fine young man, he likes to eat food with eggs but only organic eggs. Everytime he eats commercially produced eggs, his body gets swollen, allergic to some chemicals that are present in the eggs.
To solve his problem, his family has several chickens that are laying naturally produced eggs. This is the only way for him to enjoy foods with eggs.

As I remember my grandma telling me before, eggs that are produced the natural way is better compared to those commercially produced ones. Thats why my grandma hates it when my mom buys commercial eggs.

Does anyone here keeping chickens?!

There's a growing trend of people keeping chickens living in urban areas. Unfortunately, most cities here in NA still ban keeping livestock in the city. This includes our current city where my wife and I dwell. I, especially my wife love chickens! We miss raising chickens at our backyard for meat and eggs when we're in 'Pinas.  Sad Smiley

Why we should raise our own chickens

1. Fresh, healthy, delicious eggs, free of pesticides and antibiotics.
2. Chickens when raise organically (free-range) or in a movable coop is a healthy source of protein.
3. Chickens eat table scraps, reducing municipal solid waste.
4. Chickens produce a rich fertilizer by-product, high in nitrogen, eliminating the need for petrochemical fertilizers.

There are other great benefits that I miss for sure. My point here is that it's our basic right to have access to healthy food; the right to produce food for our own and for our family had been long forgotten or neglected. Embarrassed

The alarming increase of process and manufactured food in our country is tremendous. People are programmed to patronize the chemical laced flavourings in process foods, for convenience  No wonder the increase of food allergy, diabetes and cancer related diseases, especially to young people are incredibly frightening compare 40 years ago.

Hay naku, people here where we live want to live simple lives by going back-to-basics. They’re proud when tanned by the sun for spending health activities outdoor, or tending edible garden. While people in our country keep embracing western lifestyle (gustong pumuti), to what they thought is better. Angry
Chickens to the rescue!!!

I agree with you sir PinoyBee.
When I was assigned in Arizona, it was heartwarming to know that American white people like our color, our Filipino brown color. Kaya pagbalik ko ng pinas, Im proud to tell my fellow Filipinos that WE should be proud of our culture and our color.
And take note, hindi na marunong mag tagalog (hanep!!).

I wanna keep chickens!
kahit hens lang, kaso hubby feels na mahati oras ko if i have chickens. Baka daw mawala ako ng time sa bees. Sus, Two or three lang sana. Maybe some of you can convince him.
hehehe kahit tinatawanan ako by some peeps, and I know they find me weird cause i like to plant and keep bees and wants chickens, and I do know they feel that way with their little off remarks at times, I do not care, I just feel that they are incapable of understanding, hanggang doon lang sila eh. Ganun talaga. But those peeps have other good side din naman. Di mo naman maalis talaga colonial mentality natin eh.
Mas marami naman  pinoys that are cool eh Kahit maarte pa yan, basta pinoy, I know always are good peeps basically.
Just glad to know there are peeps out there that are appreciative. And Pinoy Beekeepers are the best peeps Cheesy

Weird/strange/crazy people with weird/strange/crazy ideas are the ones who makes the world go round.

Hi Tiki! You're awesome! Smiley  . Keeping few chickens (or hens) will provide you cheapest protein on your table, and when raised naturally, it's more healthier! Hope you get few hens in your backyard soon  Wink Marami benefits ng raising chickens, bukod sa meat and eggs nila... pwede mo din silang gamitin to control your Drones, it's a good source of protein to then. When we were there I used to feed my cluckers with "unwanted" Drones  Smiley. It's better if you raise the native breed. I heard Darag native chickens are good breed. I think Bochekokik know this kind of chicken  Wink

All I can say is
Life is too short  not to keep honeybees and Chickens too!!!
